"The Book of Life" features some of the most visually stunning animation I have ever seen, which really just highlights the fact that it deserved a much better script. With some tighter execution, it could've been the animated film of the year.

It's still good stuff, don't get me wrong, but it's missing a vital thing; anticipation. If we cared about the story as much as we cared about ooh-OMG and awe-ing at the (incredible) artwork, lt'd propel it into family film history if Del Toro would've been surrounded by a crew even half as inventive as himself.
