Review of The Book of Life (2014) by Rob W — 15 Apr 2016
The first Toy Story had better animation... I understand Pixar is king in computer animation but this reminded me of the headless horseman cartoon on FOX during the late 90's. The only fluid body part of the characters is the mouths and eyes.
Everything else is marionette, block style animation. Every character is literally a stringless marionette. It's like an elongated computer animated cartoon show made by Nickelodeon. Heard about this movie before it came out and heard the "day of the dead" theme was too bleak so major changes happened.
As far as Guillermo del Toro films go, you'd never guess he had anything to do with this one. Maybe I'm missing something, but this entire film seemed like a budget friendly approach to encapsulating the spirit of Dia De Los Muertos.
As for the soundtrack... Irish jig pop song converted for a Mexican themed movie... Disney pays money to compose music for movies they care about...
