While the story may have been done and does have a bit of trouble staying focused, Book of life is an obvious excuse just to play around with phenomenal visuals and imaginative ideas. However, there really is surprisingly a lot of.

Charm to it. As mentioned, the story, while been done in it's ideals, is clever in it's execution. Same can be said for the characters, particularly in it's main characters. In fact, that's where the movie really surprised me. This is the kind of movie that has a ton of characters, and every single one of 'em, whether through the unbelievable designs or cleverly presented development of each and everyone of them, are all memorable. Another admirable traits of the film is it's music. Being a sort of a jukebox musical, most of the songs consists of.

Renditions, albeit very well done renditions, of timeless classics. And of course, do I even need to mention the animation? Not only id the animation incredibly pretty to look at, but the designs and the environments are some of the most unbelievable I've ever seen in an animated film. And given the animated films I've seen over the years, that's saying a lot. So, even though the story probably could've use maybe just one or two more rewrites, it's a film that not only did I love from beginning to end, but does get better every time I see it. I'd say if you're the least bit forgiving to a slight, predictably been done story and main characters, I'd say check it out.
