Review of The Book of Life (2014) by Deana B — 03 Mar 2015
This movie was pretty cute, although it took me some time to adjust to the uniqueness of the animation style. Very neat, but dark. Takes you into Mexican culture and the Day of the Dead. The ruler of the World of the Remembered and the World of the Forgotten place a bet on three young friends, two young boys and one girl - which boy will marry the girl.
There is a lot of comedy and the colors are vibrant in the film, which would perhaps bring more life to it, but it is still holds a dark feel. I personally would be wary of my child viewing it until a certain age simply due to the portrayal of other worlds or realms, rather, that souls fall into - such as limbo in a way.
There was a lot about this movie that I liked, or rather ended up liking at the end, but there was also a lot that was.. flat. For lack of a better word. Other movies stole my heart already, such as How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Interstellar.
