Review of The Book of Eli (2010) by Brady H — 11 Apr 2012
I think it's hard to disagree with the fact that this movie is uneven, but most of what makes it uneven(the ending) is less than five minutes of the total running time. For a lot of the film, it's a very creative and disturbing thriller, focusing on the habits of people who are no longer compelled to follow the rules of civilization dressed up as an action movie.
It's Cormac McCarthy directed by Michael Mann. The direction is often creative and evocative, with scenes you've experienced a hundred times before done in a new way. Towards the end, it explores spirituality, albeit not very deeply.
The film has an enormous grasp and it cannot possible do justice to all the ideas it has, but too many ideas is far better than too little.
