Review of The Book of Eli (2010) by Tom D — 30 Aug 2014
So.... that twist didn't qualify as a twist cause really there wasn't enough of a mindfuck involved for it to be worthwhile. I was more distressed over the killing and eating of cats and birds than the cannibal couple.
The acting was great, but I kept waiting for it to take it's point and make it brilliant. Yes The Bible is, was, and always will be used by and for both good and evil alike. There wasn't really a whole lot of using it for good though and they only made one very brief nod to that.
I'm intrigued at the notion that in a post-apocalyptic world without food or water or hygiene products or electronics everybody has an endless supply of guns and bullets but only Denzel Washington knows how to aim them.
I feel like if we were gonna have this guy wandering in the wilderness for 30 years we may as well have made it 40. I don't have any idea what Mila Kunis going off to kick ass at the end of the movie had to do with the very vague message they were conveying.
I kept thinking "oh the acting really is very good, it must just have not been received well because it's so bleak, I bet it'll be brilliant any second now." and it never got there. It was extraordinarily straight forward, and I think I really have been on an unfulfilled quest for brilliance lately.
But even for straight forward I feel like it was lacking in the entertainment quality. It just sort of existed.
