Review of The Boogeyman (2023) by Nnogohko — 05 Jun 2023

When compared to the recent streak of horror hits like Evil Dead Rise, Smile, Barbarian, and X, this feels a little generic. However, this film has a very compelling lead and Sophie Thatcher gives an excellent performance.

The little girl who plays her sister is also terrific. The three central characters, the dad, the daughter and the sister are very well developed. I felt the first act was a lot more engaging and I was on the edge of my seat in those early scenes.

Unfortunately, the film does feel like it is being stretched out too long despite being a very simple story. The film isn't very scary either as it rolls into the final act despite having a very impressive set piece at the end that is very entertaining.

The film also looks great and the chilly atmosphere I thought was well maintained throughout. It's a horror film that isn't one of the best of its kind but it's really solid.
