Review of The Boogey Man (1980) by Alicia M — 02 Jun 2010
Another slasher film that tries to cash in on Halloween's success. Luckily though, the premise has an added layer of the supernatural that elevates it above most other slasher films of its time. The sustained tension throughout also gives the film a disturbing quality.
From the eerie set pieces to the unnerving music, this is one horror film that would have fucked me up as a child. The controversy that lead to its banning, undoubtedly involves the scenes with children (the opening as well as the later window killing).
To this day, they are still pretty disturbing. The difference between Halloween's opening is that we don't know its a child until after the fact. With The Boogeyman, it is clear from the start, giving it a completely different psychological feel.
