Review of The Boogens (1981) by Reginald W — 16 Feb 2016
Fun low-budget Horror film from the 1980s. in 1912, a cave-in closes a silver mine in Silver City in the American Southwest and now a major mining company is sending in engineering teams with the idea of reopening the mine.
Of course, given the genre, this is a very, very bad idea. Check list for an enjoyable 1980s low-budget Horror movie. Attractive (and horny) protagonists; check. A Cassandra-like sinister old man hanging around; check; A mysterious event in the past that holds clues to what is happening today (well, in 1982); check.
Useless authority figures, the chief engineer and a sheriff's deputy who are not much help; check. An annoying but cute pet dog; check. A no-name cast; check. Rebecca Balding did do a number of these films and Ann-Marie Martin went on to star in Alan Spencer's Cult TV series Sledge Hammer and I am pretty sure John Crawford was Joan's adopted son.
Finally a pre-CGI monster that is a cheap FX (but has a degree of charm) so the director (James L. Conway) wisely keeps us seeing the creatures in all their glory until the end; check. Well paced and suspenseful with enough gore to satisfy genre fans; check.
