Review of The Bone Collector (1999) by Michelle P — 11 Jul 2008
So begins my new career as an OFFC(old fart film critic}. THE BONE COLLECTOR deserves better than its overall 24% rating, thus my slightly inflated personal rating. The flick is involving from beginning to end, and it didn't telegraph the identity of its psycho villain.
Most importantly to this reviewer, the supporting cast was excellent. We expect excellent work from the likes of a Denzel or Angelina . Thats why they make the big bucks, and they both earned their paychecks on this one. Yet the contributions of pros like Queen Latifa, Luis Guzman, Michael Rooker and the underappreciated Leland Orser really keeps the proceedings interesting.
Plus I am a big fan of Phillip Noyce. He got the greatest back to back old fart performance in my memory(what there is left of it} from Michael Caine in Rabbit-Proof Fence and The Quiet American. And who can forget the power of their first viewing of Dead Calm.
Mr. Noyce only lacked one minor detail to make this one among his best ... a decent script. No biggie. Nobody was out for any Oscars anyway and I sure as hell didn't come close to dozing off once, not even a nod.
I am only really grumpy about the fact that they let only little red riding hood survive. How bout letting poor ole gramps survive just once in these thrillers. And I was sure pulling for the dude to pull thru who wound up human sushi for local rat populace.
