Review of The Bone Collector (1999) by Sam G — 24 Jul 2008
This was a good thriller, quite contrary to the critics beliefs. I found it very entertaining and suspenseful at points.
The plot centres around ex-NYPD cop, Lincoln Rhyme, who became quadriplegic after an accident. He is asked by his former collegues to look at a case of homocide in which the murderer has left clues to the next killing. He, and the cop who discovered the body Amelia Donaghy, work together to find the killer and stop him from committing any more crimes.
First of all, I must applaud the cast for their performances. Jolie gave a memorable performance, and Washington pulled off his handi-capped character very well. The cinematography was innovative and different. One thing I should point out is the creepy dates. They show shots of the Two Towers (it's always weird seeing them) and later they reference the date the murderer was planning to kill the next person on. It's the 9th of the November. 9/11. Spooky.
I also loved the script. Whilst I did detest the opening shot of Denzel, the script provided just the right words to each situation.
As I mentioned before, I didn't like the opening shot, and I also detested the closing scene, and the song that went with it. It didn't fit the mood of the film, and left people with bad impressions at both ends.
Overall, whilst the bookends were tacky, the material in between was of high quality. An under-rated film.
8/10.
Moo-girl.
