Review of The Bone Collector (1999) by Michael T — 23 May 2013
Pretty good Denzel Washington vehicle with Denzel playing a brilliant NYPD forensics expert who is renedered a quadraplegic. Angelina Jolie is a young NYPD officer who impresses Washington with her obvious CSI skills and he drafts her to serve as his on-sight proxy while investigating a particular gruesome serial killer who prowls Manhatten in a taxi kidnapping victims.
Queen Latifah plays Washington's live-in nurse; Michael Rooker (the serial killer in HENRY, PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER) plays a senior NYPD officer with a grudge againts Washington's character; Luis Guzman (hey, its that guy.
..) plays a funny police techie; and Ed O'Neil leaves his Al Bundy persona in the garbage and portrays a senior NYPD homocide investigator (a role that fits O'Neil like a glove; he played "Popeye Doyle" in a failed TV pilot based on the FRENCH CONNECTION).
A very good thriller (with horror overtones) with lots of plot twists and red herrings that keep the viewer on their toes; Jolie is frequently alone and apparently vulnerable (despite having either a Glock 9mm or S&W .
38 on her person at all times) but the killer might be after the totally helpless Washington. Very good performances by a solid cast and solid direction from Phillip Noyce. Ideal seasonal viewing with Halloween comng up.
