Review of The Bodyguard (1992) by Ben L — 20 Feb 2011
Woah, this film is looooooong. Remembered solely for its' theme tune, pe say, I will always love you, this film is easily forgotton. Hence why I forgot most of the story when I saw it way back when. Whitney Houston does turn in a good performance but this feels rather like a musical as she spends most of her time singing rather than acting. Kevin Costner is, big surprise, Kevin Costner. He does bring a certain...je ne sais quoi...to the role but nothing no one else could have done better. The story is a bit long and the script a little weak but there is enough intrigue to keep the viewer watching. Would have been better if someone else was the whodunnit rather than who it turns out to be, which if you watch closely, can guess a mile off thanks to Costner's acting skills ('I'm going to look at you with a subtle contempt to show viewers who the bad guy really is - I hope no one is watching me').
See this if you want to see what sparked Whitney Houston to cover a Dolly Parton song. Otherwise, watch it in the background. Do some ironing. Perfect film for that.
