Review of The Bodyguard (1992) by Jakeeyah L — 04 Jun 2012
The quality of this movie is its own love triangle. You have the sensitive, "right" story of a celebrity naive to her own danger and the hard-nosed bodyguard who cuts through the showbiz BS to protect her as well as love her for herself.
Then there's the bad boy, "guilty pleasure" story which charms at first with the first couple of threats to Houston, but becomes groan-inducing with the constant assassination attempts and drama bombs.
For all its flaws, this romance deserves major credit for not only the interracial angle in 1992 but also holding back the (romantic) kitsch for a good while - Costner and Houston's characters are guarded professionals, and they don't go googly-eyed with lust.
