Review of The Bodyguard (1992) by Thomas P — 23 Jun 2013
Despite the fact that I had not seen this film until a good 20 years after its release, it still had that nostalgic feel to it. A simple enough story told well enough, nothing too special so far. But the real delight here are the two central performances.
Whitney seems to have been acting forever - not sure how close to this she is in real life, but I fell in love with her from the moment she shows sassiness and good humour. She plays perfectly against her bodyguard to begin with, but their growing chemistry is so realistic.
And then we come to Costner - the most understated star of all. Perfectly cast and worthy of being anyone's hero. His mystery is key to his character, and by the end we all went them to get together (or want to get with either of them ourselves).
As for the ending - one of cinema's very best - uncertain, heartbreaking and impossible to decide what has happened. Oh and the songs are amazing and work brilliantly to the action.
