Review of The Blues Brothers (1980) by Kieran T — 11 Mar 2010
This is absolutely, without a doubt, the greatest comedy of all-time! Of all time. Is it funny? Hell yes. Is it entertaining? Abso-fucking-lutely, close to 50 cars were smashed up- not to mention the car chase through the mall. Your looking at the full package, this is the funniest/most entertaining movie that anyone could see.
As if you need reminding of the plot... But its a story of redemption for Jake (Belushi), who has just been released from prison. Him and his brother need to legally obtain $5000 or else the orphanage they grew up in as kids will be shut down, so they decide to bring back together their band. As you know while on this mission loads of funny shit happens, my favorite being their interaction with the Illinois Nazi's. Unfortunately on their mission they get into serious trouble with the law and are being hunted down by some serious federal heat. They are able to get the money but are eventually arrested and thrown in jail, and in jail they re-form their band and play for other inmates.
What is great about this movie? Well, if I was going to narrow it down to two things... I would say the star powered cameos, and the general foolishness that is the plot. We get such stars as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, John Candy, Steven Speilberg and of course Princess Leia. Seeing as this movie is music-based in nature it made a whole lot of sense that they should cast musicians to fill up the cast. Boy did they ever. For me they didn't have to say anything funny, it was just as entertaining seeing them pop up on screen for the first time. This movie was centered around a fantastically wacky idea, and the script did a wonderful job bringing it to fruition and making it work.
This was the best of all the SNL ideas to hit the silver screen. Now that statement doesn't mean as much, with the shitty writing they have going on over there nowadays. The Blues Brothers stands alone on the peak of Mount SNL, and if you learn anything from this review let it be to never watch another SNL movie again. Seriously, they are coming out with a MacGruber movie. Please don't go, maybe if we get enough people to boycott it and it flops, SNL will stop making shity skits into movies.
But maybe they can't be stopped... they're on a mission from God.
