The prototypical teenagers-versus-aliens schlockfest is remarkable for several reasons - the introduction of 'Steven' McQueen playing a part 10 years too young for him, the steady no-nonsense direction by Irvin 'Shorty' Yeaworth, an ordained Methodist minister, the Anywhere, U.
S.A locales of real-life Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, and of course, the Blob itself, one of the strangest monsters ever hatched from a meteor - essentially a gelatinous, oozing, amorphous...er, blob.
..of raspberry-colored silicone, the same material used in certain cosmetic surgeries - so it could be argued that the entire town is threatened by an enormous breast implant (insert Freudian joke here).
The scariest thing about the film is how obtuse the local constabulary is, and the Archie and Jughead antics of the delinquents straight out of the casting call from 'Rebel Without A Cause'.
