Review of The Blob (1958) by Hoss R — 09 Nov 2011
A meteor crashes into earth exuding a pink ooze which can affix itself onto people and devour them. When doing so, this "blob" grows larger and larger. Steve Mcqueen, in his first starring role, plays a smooth high schooler who witness this creature but can't seem to convince the authorities or even his own parents that it's real.
This has to do with the fact that the blob completely consumes it's victims, leaving no trace of their bodies. A major section of the film involves a group of high schoolers doing whatever they can to warn people of this monster, which yields little success.
The film really speaks to this notion of distrust from parents and adults, in that they have no trust in the youth and this is how 'the Blob' escalates. The Blob is a classic horror film that really isnt nearly as good as it's reputation.
The acting can be rather wooden and it really is the definition of a 50's b-movie. I think the reason the film is so praised is because of the creativity of 'the blob' and how influential it was to films which would follow.
These are some fantastic special effects for the time.
