Review of The Blob (1958) by Jacquline P — 03 Feb 2012
(4 Stars) The Blob is the archetypal 50's drive-in B movie... a meteorite crashes in small town America and terror ensues. It's very campy, but it has some of the best special effects in any monster movie ever made.
Whether or not you like the movie, you will remember it most for the red gelatinous mass of death and be fascinated by it. There's also a hint of a juvenile delinquent story along the lines of James Dean's work and playing the lead in one of his first movie roles is Steve McQueen, who is kind of funny being in this low budget monster movie considering the work he would later go on to star in (but we all gotta start somewhere).
At least it's a colorful, engaging low budget monster movie, you can tell the budget was used very well; this movie looks like a vibrant postcard from the 1950's. If you love vintage monster pictures where you'll remember the monster more than the commentary on communism, then see The Blob!
