Review of The Blob (1958) by Jackson J — 09 Jun 2012
This is the science fiction film that got me hooked on the genre. I first watched it in the mid '90 when it was playing as a midday movie. I hadn't watched anything like this movie before and it fascinated me.
I was half way through the movie when the power went out. I couldn't believe it. By the time it came back on, the movie was over. I had to see the complete movie. It wasn't until several years later that I was fortunate enough to find a copy on VHS. At last I got to see the whole thing, and it was as good as I remembered it. Now I have a copy on DVD that I pull when I'm in the mood for a great 1950's science fiction and I never get tired of it.
So what is it about this movie that makes it such a 'must see'? I think that maybe it isn't trying to be something that it's not. It is its own film. The town that it is also set in has a 'Pleasantville' kind of feel to it; the kind everyone would secretly like to be a part of.
If you're wondering what 1950's science fiction to watch, The Blob - starring Steve McQueen should be at the top of your list.
