Review of The Blob (1958) by Daniel P — 22 Sep 2012
Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. and Russell S. Doughten Jr. direct this classic B sci-fi film that is another prime example of 1950s cinema. Steve McQueen makes his first starring role appearance as Steve Andrews, a local teenager who suddenly starts to realize that something from outer space may be invading his town.
No one around him seems to believe him except for his fellow teenagers, who are more than willing to help him out in trying to warn the town. The problem is, will they be able to convince everyone in time, or will they continue to be ignored and not trusted by most of the adults in the town.
The plot is not that complex and the special effects are very, very dated. But where the film shines is in McQueen's performance. Even though he is hampered with cheesy dialogue and a B movie plot, McQueen's charisma still shines through.
It is clear why in a couple years from this film's release date, he would become a huge Hollywood star. A fun film to watch nonetheless and a harmless low budget sci-fi film.
