Review of The Blob (1958) by Andrew K — 14 Nov 2012
Anne and I watched this two nights ago, and thought it was pretty fun. In some ways, its the paradigmatic B-movie: A blob from outer space begins eating the members of a small town, and the only people that can stop it are a plucky group of teenagers (led by Steve McQueen in first lead role).
It's actually much better than typical B-movie fare, though, in that the writers and actors clearly care about their characters (and do a generally good job with them), and the directing and cinematography are actually somewhat creative (I'm thinking mostly of the special effects here, but it holds generally true).
It's a good reminder that B-movies don't *have* to be all about campiness, (Confession: If you describe something to me as "campy", and it's not season 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I'm very unlikely to want to watch it with you.
