Made using a small budget and actors with limited talent, the story is supposedly a metaphor for the threat of Communism to the US, but with a charming Steve McQueen (in his first starring role) leading a pack of likeable youths, middle America is in safe hands. The special effects and score provide the occasional thrill, but the film's title song is perhaps what it is best known for. In all, this is a standout from the cycle of monster movies and creature features that came out of the 1950s.

Followed by the purposely-bad sequel, 'Beware! The Blob' in 1972 and an effective remake in 1988.

This review of The Blob (1958) was written by on 12 Jul 2012.
