Review of The Bling Ring (2013) by Jake N — 28 Nov 2013
This has been sitting on my coffee table in a Netflix envelope for over a month now, and I know now why I was so reluctant to watch it. It's based on a true story, and it pretty much just presents that story as is.
There's nothing deep or meaningful about it, and there are no likable characters any normal person could relate to. It made me think of another recent movie about teenagers doing bad things called Spring Breakers.
This is like a less artistic and relevant version of that with no sense of humor or irony. There's really nothing to take away from this film. I guess it's reflective of the internet and consumer culture that is its subject matter, and it's trying to convey some message about materialism and celebrity obsession.
But by the end, you really don't care about any of it. I know that Sofia Coppola is capable of greatness (Lost In Translation), so this vapid retelling of a Vanity Fair article is beyond disappointing.
