Review of The Bling Ring (2013) by Jenny T — 27 Dec 2013
Sofia Coppola has created an immersive and rebellious world surrounding a group of teens whose obsession with fame, wealth and celebrity culture takes a nasty spin as they break into celeb's homes and steal, pose and live the high life thinking that nothing will get in their way.
The style and vibrance is as rich as the items being stolen, everything is beautifully framed and the nature of the cinematography takes on a high contrast that reflects the sunny weather of California which gives off an upbeat and relaxing vibe, which definitely reflects the characters as they break in so casually.
Meet Nicki, Sam, Marc, Rebecca and Chloe who are the "Bling Ring", this is all based on real life events and real people and Director/Writer Sofia Coppola fully embraces these tempted teens, she brings them to life and their personalities are so clear from the moment they appear on-screen, and the cast perform to perfection, especially newcomer Katie Chang who is unforgettable and of course Emma Watson is top but this time she's no sweet Hermione Granger.
I don't have any faults or big problems with this fine piece of filmmaking, the soundtrack is pure party greatness and it's good fun listening to it and watching the cast dance around in slow motion to it.
Undeniable style and winning writing gives this shocking true story the film adaptation goodness it needs.
