Review of The Bling Ring (2013) by Katherine H — 23 Apr 2014
Sofia Coppola gives us an array of intriguing characters in this modern-day story of youth obsession with celebrities and luxury brands. It's not just about rich kids robbing much richer celebrities; it's not the money they wanted, it's the lifestyle they wanted to be a part of. And in the whole process of being prosecuted as criminals, these offenders become the thing they most admire: celebrities!
Newcomers Katie Chang and Israel Broussard were commendable as Rebecca, the celebrity-obsessed ringleader of the group, and Marc, the intelligent but shy new kid in school who becomes a part of all this due to his interest in fashion and his want of company. But it's the talented Emma Watson who is the scene-stealer as the spoilt rich kid obsessed with brands and parties; she's comic gold with her spot-on imitation of wild-child behaviour and talking-style.
Overall, it's an almost fun ride to see an youthful venture spinning out of control. But with more character development, more plot, and more focus, the movie could have packed a better punch as a black comedy/satire.
