It certainly isn't a novelty when it comes to sentimental sports films and is rather patronizing in its conceptions of characters, racial tension, and Christian charity but Bullock packs a much needed punch as a quick witted affluent woman who takes the lead character under her wing and the film is good bubble gum for the inspirational biopic genre.
