Review of The Blackout (2009) by Countess N — 10 Aug 2010
Feels like some direct to Sci-Fi Channel bullshit. It's Christmas Eve in an apartment in Los Angeles. There have been power outages all day, and when nighttime nears, it goes off and doesn't come back up.
Soon, there are sightings around the apartment of monsters that look like they could be the ugly male counterparts of the chicks in Primal Scream's "Miss Lucifer" music video (obscure much?), so the residents band together and try to get out of the apartment alive, which is trickier than it should be, because none of these residents have ever seen a horror movie and continually want to split up.
The acting here is godawful. I can understand having a low budget, but there was not a compelling character in the lot; it was partly the lines they had to deliver, mostly the acting ability, or rather inability, of the no-name cast.
Another glaring flaw in the movie is the sound editing; when you can't hear your actors over the score, there's a problem. The one and only one thing The Blackout has going for it is there is a handful of cool kills that made me laugh heartily.
It's just a bad, low budget movie that feels like it could have been released by The Asylum.
