Review of The Black Stallion (1979) by David Z — 17 Jul 2009
A near-perfect children's film. Caroll Ballard's typical visual brilliance is on display here; pictorialism at its best here. Every shot could be framed and hung in a museum. This horse is not a Disney creation; it has no silly quirks to it, makes no attempt to be human.
Why would Black need to? This horse is such a stunning creation that to mimic humanity would be an insult to its creation. There is a bit of disconnect between the first half of the movie and the second though.
I far preferred the island sequence to the racing sequences personally, though I seem to be in the minority on that one.
