Review of The Black Hole (1979) by Matthew T — 14 Jul 2008
What can be said about the Black Hole is that it had as much imagination and ambition as Star Wars. It was however the long drawn out production and its faulty execution, not to mention Disney's financial troubles, that doomed this film to near obscurity.
The look of the film after all these years holds up extremely well. The art direction is phenomenal as well is the score by John Barry. Unfortunately some of the science in this science fiction film is way off as well the plot is loosely strung together.
It also is an interesting film because of its subject matter. In many ways its far more adult than Star Wars and yet it was made by Disney. Though there are light hearted cartoon moments with the ESP robots Vincent and Bob as well as action sequences sporting special effects, the story and mood of the film ultimately turns dark. In the end one can say the metaphorical conflict in this film is between faith and science with the end message of man's obsession with exploration and sciences will lead a person to be trapped in hell.
