Review of The Black Cauldron (1985) by Adam R — 26 Dec 2013
The Black Cauldron neglects one essential ingredient a Disney movie should have. There are no songs, which made this the first Disney animated film where music had no role. I found that difference immediately noticeable, but that is far from the only thing that make this movie perhaps the worst full length animated theatrical effort by Disney ever.
The Black Cauldron marked indeed another first for Disney as it was also the first animated Disney film to receive a PG rating. My first time viewing this was as an adult and even I found the Horned King to be a disturbing character.
Much of the film is frightening and dark beyond what is reasonable for a family outing and when it's not scary it's pretty boring. I give it some credit for being a unique and original Disney feature, but it's not one I have the desire to rewatch.
(First and only viewing - Sometime in 2009).
