Review of The Black Cauldron (1985) by Paul M — 27 Jun 2008
Finally, finally got around to watching it. I read the books many years ago, and I've always enjoyed them. The film, however, is bloody awful. As an adaptation of the first part in a five-book-series, it's a disaster, missing out amazingly large chunks of storyline, in favour of the more traditional Disney story telling (Be true to yourself, etc).
The plot and execution, the creation of the characters, the whole thing is a bloody mess.
An incredible disappointment. Don't bother. Read the books instead.
Shame, really. In the hands of Studio Ghibli, this could have been something really special.
