Review of The Black Cauldron (1985) by Steve F — 21 Jan 2009
Lord Of The Rings Lite. This was the only Disney animated feature length movie I hadn't seen, and I was attracted to it because, according to IMDb trivia, it had to be cut twice to go from a PG-13 or R rating down to PG...and even then, the PG rating for a film like this was a first for Disney.
That being said, I'd like to see the original cut. This movie was not well-paced. Too much was happening too quickly, and so many characters were ill-used. Pros...the villain kicked ass, it was dark-toned, I thought the score was pretty good. Cons...pacing, too many characters, too many ANNOYING characters, and the most kickass sword ever was barely used.
Overall, it's not great, but watchable if only to see the villain die a horribly graphic and painful death at the end. That kicked ass.
