Review of The Black Cauldron (1985) by Richard V — 19 Feb 2011
On odd, unconvetional little Disney. But one of my favourites. As an old school 'sword and sorcery' fan, this Celtci fantasy was always going to say more to me than the more obvious Disney Classics.
The short run time means that the plot is slight, and I understand that had I read the books on which it was based I would be throwing things at the screen for the liberties that it takes with the source material.
Don't agree with my rating? I suggest you listen to the audio version of the film. The vocal skills of Nigel Hawthorne and the performance of John Hurt as the Horned King haunted and terrified me as a child, and this will always colour my perception of what is often seen as the nadir of Disney's calssics range.
