Review of The Black Cauldron (1985) by Bill T — 06 Apr 2011
Not a bad Disney sword and sorcery animated film here. Made in the so called "Dark" period, where Disney wasn't making a lot of money, and were attempting to re-structure themselves by making darker films both non animated (Something Wicked This Way Comes and The Black Hole) and Animated (this film and The Fox And The Hound).
These films are just BEGGING to be rediscovered and re-evaluated for what they are. While The Black Cauldron is just ok, the plot is too thin and there's a wee bit too many cutesy characters, the darker elements are what's dazzling here.
The skeletal protagonist should give the kids nightmares and the plot, about wanting to raise the dead to create an indestructable army, should raise some parents eyebrows (and create cheers from Army Of Darkness fans?) some sloppy animation here and there, but an interesting film nevertheless.
