Review of The Black Cauldron (1985) by Larry W — 13 Aug 2011
A rather unfairly maligned gem. The relentlessly dark tone of this movie--never breaking for a happy song--puts a lot of Disney fans off. Fans of the Rankin-Bass/Bakshi school, however, should love it.
As a classic fantasy, it's also great, though the resurgence in Tolkein's popularity seems to put off people who are somehow under the impression that he invented many of the fantasy tropes reused here.
