Review of The Black Cauldron (1985) by Kyle O — 11 Nov 2011
With all of its ambition, "The Black Cauldron" could've been a grand slam from Disney. Instead, it's a massive mess that was made into an even bigger mess when Jeffrey Katzenberg got a hold of it.
Aside from the unremarkable story, the flat writing and the cliches, "The Black Cauldron" does have some great visuals, some neat special effects and some wonderful dark moments. Unfortunately, without a great story or characters to connect with, the visual thrills seem like gimmicks at best.
Overall, "The Black Cauldron" could've been an epic comeback for Disney at the time, but sadly, it wasn't.
