Review of The Black Cauldron (1985) by Trevor R — 09 Apr 2013
"The Black Cauldron" is an example of classic archetypes being ground into boring mush. This interpretation of Taran is one of the dullest fantasy heroes I know of, and I can't imagine a more obnoxious sidekick than Gurgi.
Even John Hurt is wasted as The Horned King: the most basic of villains, devoid of personality or goals beyond just being evil. This isn't a bad movie (and there are sequences that work well), but not memorable at all.
Lloyd Alexander deserves better.
