Review of The Black Cauldron (1985) by Destiny B — 10 Dec 2011
I was intrigued by the idea of this dark Disney movie, and wanted to watch it. However, I found the characters to be very undeveloped and uninteresting. The plot was also very mediocre and forgettable, it may have been the blandest of any Disney movies I have seen.
About halfway through, I really just wanted it to be over. There were several points I was unclear on in the film, possibly because they were not remarked upon, possibly because I just couldn't bring myself to pay enough attention.
For instance, why was the main character obligated to prevent the evil king from obtaining the power of the black cauldron? Also, how exactly did this princess happen to be in the circumstance that she was? They probably said somewhere in the movie, but I will also guess that the answers were neither logical nor interesting.
I feel that this is a poor movie mainly because the scenes are too frightening for many children, yet the story is not intriguing enough for older viewers. It is not an absolutely awful movie, but I didn't find any genuinely positive qualities in it, and would not recommend it to anyone.
