Review of The Black Cauldron (1985) by Rachel J — 17 May 2009
There's a reason this is one of the most obscure Disney movies of all time. This is a very strange member in the collection, featuring weak storytelling and a very dark mood obviously meant to emulate more popular movies released at the time.
There is very little here that is appropriate to show children, and yet the characters and story are so one-dimensional it's difficult to enjoy otherwise. The only real highlight are the unique character designs and highly detailed backgrounds, though the actual animation movement is a little too choppy.
Even despite all of this, it's not a terrible movie, probably in the ranks of many other bad-but-somehow-likable-fantasy films that trouped out in the 80s, but not worth mentioning in the ranks of the Disney classics either.
