Review of The Black Cat (1981) by John P — 21 Aug 2009
Luigi Cozzi's variation on a theme, doesn't have much of anything in common with Poe's story, or the other "Black Cat" movies. The uncut release I saw was actually titled "Demons 6" and was a Japanese release with burned in Japanese subtitles.
That wasn't much of a distraction, and the quality was very very good. The movie itself I found very interesting, as the basic premise is a director is making the third movie for the Argento trilogy titled "The Black Cat", and is a story about the third mother.
A popular horror actress takes on the role as the witch Levana, who was burned at the stake in the legend. Cozzi pays homage to several Italian horror movies, and pours on the graphic violence with everything it seems.
The real witch has come back from the dead to haunt the set of the film, and begins a killing spree along with many nightmarea and delusions that are pretty fun. The movie is drenched in bright colors, and the photography is pretty cool, along with a nice soundtrack.
But all in all, the movie as a whole is pretty bad, but it's enjoyably absurd and so far out that Argento fans will probably enjoy it. I found it pretty entertaining, in kind of a train wreck way.
