Review of The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932) by Nate W — 30 Jun 2010
Barbra Stanwyck and Nils Asther exquisitely play out a delicate and unlikely love story behind Frank Capra's "The Bitter Tea of General Yen". In a story akin to "Anna and the King of Siam", Stanwyck plays a Western missionary in the Far East (China in the case of this film) who reviles the proud stubborn ways of a powerful man (Asther), but can't help but be drawn to him.
It's an adventurous departure for Capra, who most often made uplifting films about noble middle-American simpletons, but this film features a much different look and tone. One memorable dream sequence even seems to recall Hitchcock, though coming years before Hitch even made a name for himself.
