Review of The Bishop's Wife (1947) by Ian P — 24 Dec 2011
Christmas Eve and I'm watching the best Christmas movie ever made; The Bishop's Wife. I use to think Miracle on 34th Street was the best Christmas movie, but it moved to a close second. Miracle on 34th Street has everything The Bishop's Wife has; humor, magic, romance, faith GREAT acting and a story that will melt your heart, but there's one thing Miracle on 34th Street doesn't have that The Bishop's Wife does. It doesn't have Cary Grant who plays probably his best role; that of the angle Dudley sent to help a bishop in distress. If there was ever ANYONE who could convince you he was an angel; it was Cary Grant. The air of bemused self confidence and warmth Grant radiates made him perfect for this role. In addition, The Bishop's Wife has a brillant cast; David Niven, Loretta Young, Elsa Lancester, Monty Woolley and James Gleeson. Some of those names may not be familiar these days, but when this movie was filmed they were regarded as some of the best in Hollywood. The film won the Academy Award for Best Sound (Gordon Sawyer), and was nominated for Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture and Best Picture.
If you get a chance to watch this movie do so; I promise you won't be disappointed!
