Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Susan S — 07 Oct 2016
The Birth of A Nation was an excellent movie. It appears to have taken the basic story of Nat Turner's Revolt and created a powerful drama based on accurate slave narratives. True the accuracy of the story of Nat Turner himself was not largely historically accurate. However, the writer created story that informs the viewer of how it felt to be imprisoned by life and it's injustice.
Yes there were two White persons in the movie that had a conscious and did not operate totally systemic, yet they were also bound by their culture and fought against it some in their own way...
This is not new...Hollywood does it all the time changing people's ethnicity and the story line. Black people in the movie and in real life, were kept from reading and thereby kept from knowledge so that White's could maintain powerful. Women were really raped at will and beaten, and there was nothing anyone could say or do less they be killed. Teeth popped out of a person's mouth, their bodies maimed and abused. This could only be endured for so long for they were people and in life: injustice can only live for a season... accountability will seek out the injustice and justice will prevail.
I recommend this movie. Great insight into a very sick and exploitative system! Some of the remnants of slavery remain. Many will not like this movie because they will struggle with the horrors of slavery and America's guilt and shame. 4.5/5.
