Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Nicolette H — 13 Jan 2017
Was able to go to a free special screening of this last night. So even though I have some thoughts about all the controversy surrounding Director, Writer, Producer & Actor Nate Parker, I won't talk about it now.
Just want to focus on the movie. Wow. Very beautiful film. I'm shocked that this is Nate's first full length feature film cause it seems like he has been doing it forever. Absolutely in awe of the Direction & cinematography for this.
Had some perfect shots. Felt very artistic. I will say the last few seconds of the movie, I thought it was absolutely genius what they did & how they did it. It was moving. Well of course the whole movie was moving.
Sadly I had never heard of this true story. Definitely a film everyone should see to learn about. But as with most true story films, this was long. For me it did drag on a bit & got slow at times.
And of course with movies about slavery, had very hard to watch moments. The acting though was amazing from everyone. Well cast. The music was perfect as well. I do see it getting Oscar nominations but sadly due to the recent controversy surrounding it now I'm not so confident it will actually win.
But never know. Either way people should get out there & go see this. While I gave this a 4, I will admit it's not a movie I will watch many times over.
