Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Nikos R — 01 Feb 2017
Nate Parker shows incredible commitment and passion in telling this brutal and devastating true story. His direction is striking, if unsure and pretentious at times, while his performance is nothing sort of sensational.
But as powerful and important as the story is, it's a difficult one to translate into film. Birth of a Nation spends a lot of time building up to it's intense conclusion, but when it's all said and done, I couldn't help but feel a bit underwhelmed by the experience.
