Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Themovielover — 07 Oct 2016
Reading the negative comments, some already made up their minds without even knowing much about the history or the movie itself. How is this inspiring a race war when this really happened? America sugarcoats our history. For the example, I was taught the pilgrims and Indians were friends in school. Columbus was portrayed as a hero? I understand the truth hurts but come on we're all adults here.
This is not for "race baiters". This is not "another slave movie". A Nat Turner movie was never even made before please get your facts right before commenting. "Hollywood" did not green light this film, in fact, Nate Parker spent 8 years raising his own money to make it.
Sure, this film is extremely graphic and difficult to watch ;however, if it was a holocaust film it would but difficult to watch also. It's all history. A light shined on America's dark ugly past, like it or not. The film was solid in my opinion. This is not intended to "start a race war", that's absurd. Take the history lesson for what it is.
Lastly, this film is not about Nat Parker so please stop bringing up his '99 sexual assault case which he was found not guilty of.
