Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Boogie B — 09 Oct 2016
It's not at all the best portrayal of the 48 hour slave rebellion that took place in the 1800s but director Nate Parker provides a well-structured message.
As a slave and as a preacher Nat Turner does the best he can sharing his faith and love while also keeping in mind that things are not easy.
As the film progresses he finds love, has a family, and slowly opens his eyes to the cruel ways of his masters.
Believing the Lord has sent him a message Turner decides enough is enough so he gathers some followers to rise up against the uncaring slaveowners.
Nate Parker as both actor and director gives an outstanding performance, his intentions are noble if flawed yet the film strikes a chord saying something about putting a class of people under scrutiny and powerlessness.
An important piece of our history to consider as well as one to not be forgotten.
