Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Tonya H — 22 Oct 2016
The controversy around this film knows no bounds at all. It has had a big hill to walk to the top of and it could of been a Oscar contender. After seeing the film however I say that this film never really had a chance at a Oscar (Although maybe it does since this year has been full of so many duds). The film's characters aren't correctly developed and instead feel very rushed. Certain plots and ran right through without a second thought.
The film also tries to hard to have a lot of symbolism that leads nowhere. It kinda like The Matrix or Batman v Superman in that way where the film feels like it is trying to be so above and beyond and instead just feels like a plastic shell of what could of been something that was great.
That being said this film does have a lot of good in it. With all the murder in the film it does manage to hold back a bit and not show really any of it. It doesn't oversell the blood or the guts nor does it undersell it.
The film also has a lot to say about Religion and mankind and what we all desire from it. It tells that part of the story in a way that feels truly compelling and interesting as well. Making the film something to talk about.
It also was a hard film to get through, but in a good way. I felt every bit of emotion because these characters were so interesting and dynamic and made me care. I just wish there actions always felt like they went with it.
In the end I do urge people to at some point see Birth of a Nation. Could it have been something even better. Yea it could of, but it is something that I think should be seen.
