Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Khadeja H — 11 Oct 2016
The Birth of a Nation was successful in conveying--unflinchingly--the horrors and callousness of slavery in a way that was cinematically profound. I saw a few people grimace and jolt back in their chairs at some of the scenes when slaves were on the receiving end of some truly harsh piunishment.
It's always a good sign when a movie can evoke physical reaction. But the slave story is becoming redundant and no one--to date--has figured out a way to tell an old story in a fresh, new, and exciting way.
(sigh).
